How to Choose a Homeschool Tutor: 7 Things Every Parent Should Know

How to choose a homeschool tutor

Finding the right tutor for your homeschooler can feel like a big decision — because it is. A great tutor doesn't just teach subjects. They become a trusted part of your child's learning journey, building confidence and sparking curiosity along the way.

After 23 years of teaching and working with hundreds of homeschool families, here are the seven things I always tell parents to look for.

1Look for Teaching Experience, Not Just Subject Knowledge

Someone who's great at math isn't automatically great at teaching math to a 7-year-old. Look for tutors with actual classroom or tutoring experience — especially with the age group your child falls into. TESOL certification, education degrees, and years of hands-on teaching all matter.

2Personality Fit Matters More Than You Think

Your child will spend significant one-on-one time with this person. Do they have patience? Do they make learning feel safe and fun? A tutor who clicks with your child's personality can transform reluctant learners into eager ones. Don't be afraid to try a session before committing.

3Ask About Their Teaching Approach

Every child learns differently. Some need hands-on activities. Others thrive with visual aids or discussion-based learning. A good tutor will ask about your child's learning style and adapt — not force a one-size-fits-all method. Ask them: "How do you handle a student who's struggling?" Their answer tells you a lot.

4Flexibility Is Essential for Homeschool Families

One of the biggest advantages of homeschooling is flexibility — your tutor should support that, not fight it. Look for someone who can work around your family's schedule, offer makeup sessions, and adjust the pace as needed. Bonus points if they offer both in-person and online options.

5Check for Curriculum Compatibility

If you're already using a specific curriculum (like The Good and the Beautiful, IXL, or Saxon Math), make sure your tutor is comfortable working within it — or can recommend something better suited to your child. The best tutors enhance your existing plan rather than replacing it entirely.

6Social Interaction Is a Hidden Benefit

Homeschooled kids sometimes miss the social aspect of traditional school. A tutor who also offers small group classes or connects your child with other homeschoolers adds enormous value. It's not just about academics — it's about building friendships and a sense of belonging.

7Trust Your Gut (and Your Child's Feedback)

At the end of the day, you know your child best. After a trial session, ask your child how they felt. Were they comfortable? Did they enjoy it? Did they learn something new? A child who looks forward to their tutoring sessions is a child who's going to thrive.

The Bottom Line

The right tutor can make homeschooling feel less overwhelming and more joyful — for both you and your child. Take your time, ask questions, and don't settle for someone who doesn't feel like the right fit.

At Homeschool Assist of Montana, every one of our tutors is personally chosen for their teaching skill, patience, and genuine love of working with kids. We'd love to help you find the perfect match for your family.
